Creepy Coincidences

For some unexplained reason I started talking about the fact that I was a member of the Icelandic church on my way back from the post office yesterday. Since I am quite obviously an atheist that conversation ended in me claiming that I need to resign as a member.

When I came home I found something in my mail box that I have never received before and that gave me a slightly creepy feeling. A invitation to masses of the Icelandic congregation here in Oslo I couldn't stop my silly head from wondering whether this was some kind of sign.

This morning I managed to sleep through the church bells that have woken me up every Sunday morning at 10 o'clock since I moved here. I happily ceased the opportunity to decide that this was a sign that yesterdays letter meant nothing.

I have freed my head from believing in things like religion. Next on list has to be superstition!

Obvious?

Is it really so obvious that you're an atheist? I can't remember reading anything on your blog that made me think it.

My definition of atheism excludes agnostics, which is what I consider myself to be. An atheist to me is someone who says there is no God, which sounds as absurd as saying there _is_ one. An agnostic doesn't know. I acknowledge that other people might group these together under a wider atheism.

Oddly enough, here in the Middle East it's not unusual to fill a form and be asked to say what your religion is. It simplifies discrimination. I've never seen Atheist or Agnostic as an option, so I go with Other (or Christian). People don't handle NULL values very well.

Hmmm maybe you are right...

You bring up a good point here... I am honestly not sure if I am an atheist or an agnostic. I thought a lot about that a while back and I kind of gave up and slapped the atheist stamp on myself. I don't really believe but yes it doesn't really feel right to say there is no God either. It is complicated because you can also ask yourself questions such as What is God?

Interesting that in the Middle East they don't make you state your religion. I remember having to do that all the time in the States but to be honest I cannot really remember doing it here even though I am quite sure it exists on some forms. It shouldn't really matter what you are because religion should never have to have affect on anything in my opinion. It should be a private matter but unfortunately it isn't.

The NULL value is not liked anywhere I think. I remember being really reluctant to say that I didn't believe for a really long time. It just felt wrong and almost felt like people would look at me and think I belived in Satan or something.

But I am gonna give this some more thought. Try to figure what I really am:-).

You make me remember a buddhi

You make me remember a buddhist joke I once found on a blog, whose URL I can't seem to remember though.

There was this buddhist who went to a bar and asked for the price of a beer. The bartender said that it was $3 and the buddhist ordered one. After the bartender placed the drink in front of him, the guy took out a $10 bill and gave it to the bartender. He drank his beer, and waited for the change. And waited, and waited. But nothing. He then called the bartender and asked where was his change. The bartender replied simply that "change must come from within".

:D
