Off Topic

I apologize for this question being off topic but my brother has been offered a job with statoil in Hammerfest and I'm just wondering what impressions any of you have of that area, it does seem 'on top of the world' geographically.

Hammerfest

I'm born in Hammerfest and lived there until the age of 20 or so. It's rugged, not so cold in the winter as you would think and relatively windy. If you like being outdoors, Hammerfest and the surrounding area is nice with many options for outdoor activities.
The town itself has around 9000 inhabitants. It's warmer than the location would suggest because of the North Atlantic sea current, but don't expect blazingly long and warm summers. During the summer, the sun never sets, and during the winter you only have 1-2 hours of daylight. It might be an adventure worth trying.

Similar to Highlands of Scotland

Thanks very much Mitchman. I've forwarded your comment to my brother, I think his job entails 12hr shifts, 2 weeks on, 3 weeks off so the thought of not working for 3 weeks each time appeals to him :-)

Gas station or oil rig, you decide

Aha. At first, I thought your brother was offered the job as manager of a gas station (since Statoil at least here in Scandinavia run their own stations). It would appear odd to work 12 hour shifts for two weeks and then get three weeks compensation for a such job... :-D

Isn't there a big festival or party yearly in Hammerfest, or do I confuse it with something else?

Works a Vacation

He's a qualified electrician and will be working on The
world's northernmost LNG project

Actually, not only do you get 3 weeks off but you also get 'holiday pay' equivalent to 168 hrs @ £2.37 per hour which is the amount of hours worked in the 2 weeks i.e. 12 x 14.

The standard rate during the 2 weeks is £20.50 per hour.

Quite a few in the UK go to work offshore with variations on working hours, 2 weeks on, 2 off etc. Hard life working in the north sea!!

I believe my brother will be based onshore.

Stockmarket punt

one of my hobbies is playing the stockmarket using a broker account online & after some research i've bought some Statoil stock @ 27.95

STL

Not a bad stock to buy ;-) Up on merger rumours.

Buy on rumour, sell on fact - well maybe

No longer a rumour..

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Norway's Statoil on Monday said it has agreed to buy the oil and natural-gas division of Norsk Hydro for around $30 billion in a deal that will create the world's largest offshore operator.
The group will have total production of 1.9 million barrels a day in 2007, with proven oil and natural-gas reserves totaling 6.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

plus a 9 kroner dividend for Statoil shareholders, which was around 32% above Merrill Lynch's forecast dividend.

Somewhere up in nowhere

Hammerfest... uhummm I know absolutely nothing about it except that I heard recently that house prices have skyrocketet there and that it is cold:-).

I can try to ask around to see if I find anyone that has a clue about that place.

Anyone else here that has a clue?
