Taking the plunge

I decided to just do it! Update my site to the latest drupal version. Been thinking about it for over a year but always postphoning because it meant work and making a new theme. I realized it would never happen unless I just did it. What it means is that the site will look like shit for a while and might not work. Hopefully, I will be a bit more energetic fixing my site then I have been with blogging lately:-).

Nice

The new look is nice, but I miss the weirdness of the previous one.

I use Drupal on my site, and I must admit that I'm disappointed. I'm willing to put up with certain flaws just to use open-source, because I believe in it. But Drupal's a mess. It's in revision 4.7+, and I still had to find and install a serious number of modules. It's hard to even figure out what you can and can't do. Probably a great model for developers, but users need overall integration of features and a logical way of configuring everything.

I'm not sure what other CMS have to offer, but I really need something secure that can serve up SSL. My wife and I are having a kid soon, and we want to share pictures with our family only. I can't believe I'll have to start with a whole new system to make that happen...

I love this theme! :) How is

I love this theme! :)

How is the Drupal admin interface usability coming along? The last version I tested was still very messy :(

Usability and drupal, no way!

I don't think you can talk about Drupal and usability in the same sentence. It is still pretty pathetic... actually it is almost identical from before with few very minor exceptions. It has a lot more configuration options though and what is the biggest difference for me is that I can have better control over my comments. Well as you found out the image check didn't work but at least I can test people's math knowledge:-D.

Thanks! I like the theme too but not the colors. Planning on modifying it to something a bit less extreme blue. All in good time :-)

So...

things to fix:
- favicon
- where to login? I can't comment as 'Rijk'

too late:
- duplicated feed entries in my aggregator

interesting:
- to see what crazy associations Google AdSense makes for your blog

Testing anonymous comments

Hello Rijk!

Yes, I have loads of issues to sort out! Thanks for pointing out the login issue, I will try to sort that one out ASAP. There are some other problems with comments right now, think my access control got a bit screwed up... oh well, I am just happy I finally updated troubles or not. Now I might actually be able to track when I get comments and control spam.

Yes, I have been annoyed lately over the crazy Jesus/God ads I keep getting. Maybe it is time to visit Google adsense and see if I can say no thank you to religious advertisements. Don't really think the people visiting my site are interested in clicking on those:-).

WFM

Everything WFM now :)

Thank you!

Excellent!! Thank you for reporting!

Hmm..

By now, the login seems to work. However, the comment form is split into two parts far from eachother, with some random graphic elements. Maybe it is the curse for me running the all-evil Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 instead of some more sophisticated browser such as Opera or even Mozilla Firefox. I also noticed on the starting page, the narrow but tall picture you illustrated your previous post with, spans over to the previous-previous post (the one about James Bond). It looks like some issue with CSS float, clear or however it is implemented (I suppose not tables, since everyone out there hate tables these days).

The browser we do not speak of

Whoot!!! You don't use Opera?!?! *Shaking my head in disappointment*.

Yes, all the pictures in my past blogs are misplaced a bit. I need to investigate that after I sort out few other more serious issues.

I don't really see the problem with the comment from being split into two parts even in the browser that we do not speak of. I will investigate that some more. Thanks for letting me know!

Picture proof

I don't know what's wrong. For a tenth of a second, the form looks OK, but then one half of it gets shuffled down to the bottom of the page. I took several screenshots and pasted them together into one:

Odd indeed.

Testing Firefox

On the other hand, using Firefox 2.0 the login session cookies get stored but not recognized (i.e. I remain not logged in). In this case, the comment form appears in the right position.

I probably should download Opera just for reference. Perhaps it is the only browser at the moment that lets you both login and properly post messages to this blog? ;-D

Odd problems

I find it _very_ strange that Firefox and IE have more problems with this site. You would think that things had been tested better in those two. Drupal even has a Spread Firefox module....

Thanks for the screen shot! I really appreciate the help! I will try to sort out these problems one by one but there is a lot to do with Christmas just around the corner so it might take a while!

Possibly false alarm

Hm, the login works on Firefox from work, but not from home. The installed version is exactly the same, and I suppose the privacy settings are the same (default) as well. However I have verified that cookies from other sites work in the browser from both places...

BTW, TBWDNSO behaves odd also from work. I haven't downloaded TBWDNSO 7 yet, perhaps it is more standards compliant.

Firefox

removed comment

Firefox

I logged-in ok using Firefox on my mac, just had a little fault using Safari....

I clicked to reply to this thread and it said I wasn't logged-in but I was, so I clicked on My Blog and revisited this thread and upon clicking reply it recognised me as logged-in.

Odd

Hmmm this seems to be some kind of refreshing issue. Odd, odd, odd!

Some progress

I still haven't been able to see the problem in TBWDNSO 6 but I did see another similar problem in TBWDNSO 7. I think that problem now is fixed. Hopefully, that takes care of the other problem you got. Could you please test *puppy eyes* :) ?

As for cookies in Firefox... well I will keep investigating!

Clicking on random buttons

Your magic mediumgeeky puppy eyes did the trick! The comment form now appears as it should, together with some nice icons for layouting text. I wonder what this does?

Hm, the "teaser break" doesn't seem to do anything at all, or maybe it is not meant to be used inside comments.

Jippie!!

Cool! Thanks for checking Carlsson! Thanks for all the help!

The teaser break will probably only work for blog entries. I need to test this button thingy out a bit better and see if I want to keep this or maybe use something a bit cooler (or less cool). The cool thing about upgrading is that I get bunch of new cool things to play with! Now I actually get notified that someone has commented unlike before where it could take days before I realized I had a new comment.

Put in a patch for the firefox problem

Did some online digging and found out that lots of people are having problems with logging in with Firefox. Should teach them *muhahaha*. No, but I put in a patch that is supposed to fix the problems except that I have no way to test since it works on my firefox installations. So please let me know if you have any problems still!!

Two cookies is one cookie too much

I don't know if it is your fix or my inability, but I found out that if I remove all (session) cookies coming from the mediumgeek.com domain and then login again with Firefox, the login works. Apparently there was some duplicate cookies left in my cache that cancelled eachother out or something. As I wrote, it worked at first attempt from work, so probably it wasn't anything wrong with your site.

Oh well, that should conclude most of the testing phase, if your blog again is reported to work OK on all major browsers, not only the preferred ones.

Download Opera!!

Yes, apperently this was an issue with it creating an anoymous cookie when you first visited the site and then a new one when you logged in, except that one wasn't recognized because there was already another one. The patch was supposed to delete the first one when logging in... So lets hope it works from now on:-).

Thanks for helping with the testing!! But now go and download Opera;-)

Safari

all appears ok using the Safari browser.... hey i like some of these
Wordpress Themes

Darn, don't use Wordpress

I use Drupal so Wordpress themes probably wont work without some modification. Then again, this one will need modification before I am happy but I like the basic of the theme:) .
