Movies, movies
Seems like I have been going to the movie theatre a lot lately. Saw The Last Samurai Saturday. That movie was surprisingly good. I was kind of expecting it to hmmmm... suck, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I am rating it as Excellent. It wasn't perfect by any means. It had some super hollywood-like factors about it, and a lot of mistakes that made it unrealistic. Just to name an example: What are the chances that some crazy Samurai living up on a mountain speaks almost perfect English?!?! They should at least have made him speak "Engrish" :-). The movie, however, was good enough to make up for its smaller flaws. I didn't look at the clock once during the entire movie even though it was pretty long. It worries me that movies keep getting longer and longer every year. They will eventually have to introduce breaks half way through, or install toilets in all the seats. For some strange reason I would prefer the first option:-)
Anyway, I am just rambling now. What I liked about this movie was that it made you think about things. I admired the Samurais for their discipline and determination. Wanting to do everything perfectly is something I wish I could be more enthusiastic about. I have to admit though that their devotion raised some questions in my head. Like what is the difference between "Honor" and "Stupidity". Don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, but I have to say that when the Samurais believed that they were just defending their honor, I felt they were just being plain stupid. Going into a situation where you know you are gonna be butchered makes no sense to me. Guess I wouldn't be a good Samurai since in a situation like this I would simply do the best possible Forrest Gump-runaway and try to save my own ass. Maybe I am just a coward, but I have always had a problem understanding war. I just want world peace and all of that:-)
